How to win friends and influence people

  • Both officials should contact administration at least one day before game day for final logistics.
  • Early game day, contact administration to check on the impact of inclement weather.
  • Get to the field with sufficient lead time to conduct a pregame conference
  • Be available on the field for both teams so you can perform voluntary equipment checks, clarifications, etc.
  • Ensure that field markings are accurate.
  • See that table and crew are properly prepared.
  • For you guys at the college level, bring a game board even if you believe there is one in the locker room.

The good: You actually do it; the bad: You don't actually do it; the ugly: The game was moved somewhere else and you don't know about it.

Preparation meets opportunity

Just like paratroopers getting ready to perform an 850-foot combat jump, once you leave the airplane it is too late. Once the game starts, it's too late to prepare. Crew discussions before the game are essential.

  • Check uniforms, whistles, flags, beepers.
  • Turn your vouchers into the head coaches or team managers.
  • First net check.
