Coaching to the Heart
An official's view of lacrosse in Camelot

Chivalry, integrity, loyalty

s a lacrosse official, I have always viewed this game with a certain level of the "nobleness" associated with Camelot: chivalry, integrity, loyalty; the valor of the round table. The Knights in Shining Armor all had a special "love" for what they did. In lacrosse, there are no agents promising big salaries, no collective bargaining, no post season bonuses.

You play for the love of the game. You play for the challenge of winning your foe's respect. You play — because your heart tells you this is the greatest game on two feet.

Watching great coaches at all levels, I noticed a common thread. They "coach to the heart." This article is dedicated to showing my appreciation, as a judge of this game, to those who work hard to keep that balance of player welfare and accomplishment of the goal foremost in all that they do.
